Ever since German scientist Paul Erlich discovered the first “magic bullet” in medicine, researchers and marketers have searched for magical cures and treatments for virtually every human disease, ailment, and condition.
Magic bullets are easy answers to what are often difficult and challenging issues. And the truth is, there are no easy answers to life’s many challenges.
Healthcare Needs a Revolution
The statistics are sobering: Life expectancy in the US has decreased for two years in a row. The good news is that we can address and prevent most risk factors that lead to NCDs: tobacco use, poor diet, lack of physical activity, substance abuse, and air pollution. The bad news is that we already know this, we’ve known this for a long time, and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better.
What a Wonderful World
Tim and I stopped in Amarillo on our way to Colorado, staying with his old friend, Gary. Gary invited us to watch a few innings of softball before going to dinner. He plays in a senior softball league where every Tuesday night from late Spring through early Fall, men aged 50 and older get together and play ball.
