Listening
In my efforts to become a health and wellness coach I am working on becoming a better listener, so listening is a topic that’s important to me. As I’ve watched the news and witnessed all the talking, shouting, accusing, blaming, and condemning that’s been happening lately, I think that one thing the world needs now is more listening. Listening is a skill that is seldom taught, and few of us do it well. It’s much more than just hearing another’s words and understanding the meaning – listening is an act that involves mindful presence, compassion, understanding, and acceptance.
Rather Than a New Year’s Resolution, Set a SMART Goal Instead
It’s getting to be that time of year again: that time when you make your New Year’s resolutions! For good or bad, this is a tradition many of us follow, myself included. But this year, I am taking my New Year’s resolutions to the next level and making them SMART goals. SMART is an acronym for a process of goal setting along with an action plan that makes the goal more achievable. Rather than just stating a generalized goal, as resolutions often are, SMART goals are well-defined and include actionable criteria that lead to goal attainment. By setting a SMART goal, you define exactly what your goal is as well as how and by when you plan to achieve the goal. This leads to less frustration, a better chance of success, and finally: goal attainment!
Five Healthy Hacks to Help Keep You Well This Winter
Although colds and flu can occur anytime, winter is when these ailments begin to strike more often. There are legitimate reasons why we seem to get sick more often in the winter: some viruses actually become more resilient in cold weather, and as the mucus membranes lining the nose and throat become drier – thank you, central heating – viruses can more easily invade our bodies and make us ill.
With the added challenge of dealing with Covid-19 this year, it’s more important than ever to take care of yourself and reduce your chances of getting sick. And even if you do get sick – good self-care will improve your ability to recover more quickly and easily. Many people are also suffering from anxiety about the threat of Covid-19. This certainly is a frightening time, but one way to help yourself deal with any fear or anxiety you may be feeling is to take action and do what you can to prevent catching or transmitting this serious disease.
